A Freaky Friday

The Friday night before Halloween was more a horror show for most of the New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects as a stranger week continues to wreak havoc.

But before we start on the Friday report, we have to fix a mistake from last night and boy was it's a dumb one. No excuses we screwed up and misread a report and missed out on what was a highlight reel goal from Ryan Strome (NYI 2011 1st).

It turned out that Strome not only scored to extend his scoring streak to 7 games with his 6th goal of the season but he had to make it a highlight reel of a goal.

(S/T to Buzzing the Net for posting this)

You do not have to be an Islander fan to appreciate what is a true beauty of a goal but let us now fix stats as Strome is now 6-4-10 on the season. 7 games played with points in every one of them.

Friday night was a night though that nobody really stood out as the bad news for the Ranger prospects continued and while the Islander prospects did not play badly; nobody really stood out as deserving of a star.

Islander Prospects

Anders Lee (2009 6th) scored his NCAA (and Islander) leading 9th goal while teammate Robbie Russo (2011 4th) scored his 1st career NCAA goal as their 5th ranked Notre Dame defeated Bowling Green 3-1.

Lee leads all Islander prospects in goals and scoring at 9-3-12 and is on a 6 game scoring streak.

John Persson (2011 5th) notched his 4th goal of the season and converted his shootout attempt but his Red Deer Rebels fell to the Everett Silvertips 3-2 via the shootout. Persson is now 4-7-11 on the season.

Kirill Kabanov (2010 3rd)'s first point of the season was a big one as Kabanov set up what proved to be the game winning goal as his Shawinigan Cataractes defeated the Rimouski Oceanic.

The Cataractes are now 4-0-1-0 in their last 4 games as they improved to 4th overall in the QMJHL. The way they set things up in the QMJHL every game does count as they are 2 points out of 1st overall in the QMJHL.

Corey Trivino (2008 2nd) was shifted to left wing but it did not help 12th ranked Boston University as they skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with UMass/Amherst. Trivino was scoreless on one shot.

Scott Mayfield (2011 2nd) and his 2nd ranked Denver Pioneer were upset by Michigan Tech 7-2. Mayfield was scoreless as the Pioneers gave up 3 goals in the game's first 10 minutes and went downhill from there.

Brock Nelson (2010 1st) and his 13th ranked North Dakota Fighting Sioux where also upset as St. Cloud State shut them out 4-0. Nelson was on the ice for 3 out of the 4 SCS goals as North Dakota fell to 2-4-1 and soon out of the polls.

Andrey Pedan (2011 3rd) has a modest 3 game scoring streak going as he earned an assist on his Guelph Storm's 2nd goal as the Storm cruised to a 5-2 win over the Sudbury Wolves. Pedan is 2-2-4 in his last 3 games and 4-3-7 overall.

Jason Clark (2010 3rd) may not have scored but he was getting to play in his first game in almost a year as the sophomore returned to the Wisconsin Badger lineup as they lost 5-4 to Nebraska-Omaha.

Clark who suffered hip injuries that required off-season surgery was the 4th line right wing.

The Horror Story AKA The Ranger's Report

JT Miller (2011 1st) actually had a good night on offense scoring his 4th goal in his last 3 games and even added an assist. But on defense Miller and his linemates were on the ice for 3 goals against as Miller's Plymouth Whalers lost to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-3.

Miller leads the Ranger prospects in goals and points as Miller improves to 8-9-17.

Scott Stajcer (2009 5th) earned a second star for his performance against the London Knights but we can't give him a star when he gives up a goal in the game's first 31 seconds. Stajcer and his Owen Sound Attack gave up 2 early goals, rallied to tie and send the game into overtime only to lose 3-2.

Stajcer is now 1-2-1-1 2.94 goals against and a 0.906 save percentage but it appears Stacjer may have claimed the starter's job with Owen Sound having started back to back games.

Samuel Noreau (2011 5th) and his Baie-Comeau Drakkar dropped their 2nd straight game as they were shut out 3-2 by the Quebec Remparts. The Drakkar were ranked 2nd nationally earlier this week in the CHL poll but 2 losses in the QMJHL and they have fallen all the way to 7th in the QMJHL standings.

Shane McColgan (2011 5th) saw his 10 game scoring streak come to an end as his Kelowna Rockets lost to the Kamloops Blazers 5-2. McColgan was 4-8-12 during the streak and Friday night marked only the 2nd time he failed to score since returning from the Rangers (11 out of 13 games)

Michael St. Croix (2011 4th) saw his own scoring streak extended to 8 games with a primary assist but his Edmonton Oil Kings lost to the Regina Pats 4-1. St. Croix with the assist now is 3-9-12 in his last 8 games and 4-10-14 overall (3rd NYR).

Chris Kreider (2009 1st) did not score but also only took 1 shot as his top ranked Boston College Eagles despite winning 4-2 were kept in check by the UMass/Lowell River Hawks. Not going to get on Kreider's case for 1 shot because the River Hawks did a great job defensively on his entire line (and the team for the most part).

The River Hawks held BC to 6 shots in 1st, 10 in the 2n and just 4 in the 3rd and the score is misleading since BC scored an empty net goal after holding off the River Hawks all night long.

Randy McNaught (2010 7th) was scoreless with a double minor as his Calgary Dinos defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-1 in Canadian College hockey action. And to save us the "What the heck is a Pronghorn?" questions that answer is right here.

Danny Hobbs (2007 7th) tried with 8 shots on goal but could not score as his UMass/Amherst Minutemen played to a 2-2 overtime tie with 12th ranked Boston University.

Scratches

Islanders - Cody Rosen (2010 7th) Healthy

Rangers- Dylan McIlrath (2010 1st) "Upper Body" (Not going to mention that McIlrath took elbow to head last Sunday nope not a word)

Christian Thomas (2010 2nd) Game 1 of 10 game suspension
