Forgive us as while we got our holiday season off with a Friday night case of the flu, New York Ranger and New York Islanders for the most part just played some "mind was elsewhere hockey."It is hard to blame these young players as the majority of them have been away from their homes since the beginning of August. Anyone who has gone away for college or military training will understand what it feels like when you are thisclose to going home.
Shane McColgan (NYR 2011 5th) was the only prospect from either team to score a goal but his was in a losing cause as his Kelowna Rockets lost in the shootout to the Prince Albert Raiders 3-2. McColgan scored the game's 1st goal (his 10th) and he even made his shoot out attempt but it was not enough as Kelowna fell to 1-3-0-1 on their WHL Eastern conference road trip.
McColgan is now 10-24-34 for the season.
Dylan McIlrath (NYR 2010 1st) did not score but he was a +2 as his Moose Jaw Warriors extended their unbeaten streak to 4 games with a 4-2 win over the Saskatoon Blades. The Warriors moved to within 1 point of idle Edmonton for the WHL's Eastern Conference lead.
Brendan Kichton (NYI 2011 5th) and his Spokane Chiefs once again dominated the Everett Silvertips in just about every way except this time not on the scoreboard. Despite being out shot 46-25, the Silvertips scored 5 unanswered goals to rally from down 1-2 to whip the Chiefs 6-2.
Kichton had the primary assist on the Chiefs 2nd goal for his 31st point of the season but he also took an interference call in the 3rd period that led to a Silvertip goal.
Steven Fogarty (NYR 2011 3rd) did not score but his Penticton Vees tied a franchise record with their 17th straight win 5-1 over the Westside Warriors. Fogarty is 2nd among NYR prospect scorers with a 16-24-40 mark and so far has played beyond expectations.
In the OHL, Andrey Pedan (NYI 2011 3rd) is not going to be on Santa's "Nice List" after taking 2 more penalties including 1 for "abuse of an official." Pedan's Guelph Storm extended their winless streak to 4 games (0-3-1-0) as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the London Knights.
Pedan is lucky that the holiday break is coming as his 3rd straight game with at least 2 penalties might earn him a seat in the press box. Stick tap to the London Knights and their fans as it was "Teddy Bear Night" in London and Knight fans tossed 9,851 stuffed animals to the ice.
The Oshawa Generals got back Christian Thomas (NYR 2010 2nd) from the Team Canada tryout while the Plymouth Whalers saw JT Miller (NYR 2011 1st) take off for the Team USA camp. Thomas saw his 7 game scoring streak come to an end as the Whalers shut out the Generals 5-0.
Thomas went 8-9-17 during his streak but give credit to Plymouth's defense which never gave Thomas anything good to look at. The Whalers won their 5th straight game despite not having Miller who is their leading scorer with the team.
Scott Stajcer (NYR 2009 5th) was the backup for the Owen Sound Attack as they lost to the Sarnia Sting 5-3.
In the QMJHL, Kirill Kabanov (NYI 2010 3rd) set up the first goal of the game for his Shawinigan Cataractes as they defeated the Val-d'Or Foreurs 3-1. Kabanov is 13-11-24 on the season for the Cataractes who won their 4th straight game.
Samuel Noreau (NYR 2011 5th) was scoreless as his Baie-Comeau Drakkar defeated the Victoriaville Tigre 4-1. Noreau was scoreless with a couple of shots and a hit to show for his efforts.
Only 1 NCAA game on the schedule as Scott Mayfield (NYI 2011 2nd) was scoreless for the 12th straight game but his 13th ranked Denver Pioneers were able to defeat St. Cloud State 3-2 in overtime.
Mayfield has not scored since October 22nd as the freshman defenseman was a -1 for the game.
