The Quick Report

Brady Skjei (USA Hockey)
Tuesday was roster trimming day at the USA summer evaluation camp at Lake Placid, NY and the 3 prospects with local connections all survived the cuts. Brady Skjei (NYR 2012 1st) and Taylor Cammarata (NYI 2013 3rd) were no surprises as their play since day 1 has been improving with each passing day. I have to admit that I was surprised that Cristoval "Boo" Nieves (NYR 2012 2nd) was kept as he has for the most part had a very quiet camp.

At the same time we must remember that surviving the first cut means nothing except you get 2 more chances to show the USA coaching staff what you can do. I understand why the USA team wants to keep someone like Nieves as he has size, speed and solid playmaking skills that would come in handy when the 2014 World Under-20 Championships are played this winter.

It was an off day for everyone at the camp other than picturing taking as you see from Brady Skjei's picture.

The other news of the day was the Rangers signing another free agent defenseman out of the OHL as they are reported to be signing Sudbury Wolves defenseman Charlie Dodero to a contract. It is doubtful that the Rangers used a NHL contract on Dodero since they only have 2 open contracts left (with one earmarked for Derek Stepan) to use.

Dodero is 21 and is 6'2 200 who is a good skater and while he had decent offensive numbers as an overage player (7-20-27), his game will be more defensive at the pro level. Dodero was originally signed to an ATO with the CT Whale back in April.

The Wolfpack just might have the youngest blueline in the AHL next season with as many as 5 rookie defenders on the roster.
