The Saturday Night Delight

Nothing is more enjoyable than seeing a New York Ranger or New York Islander prospect play using the tools that make them potential NHL players. It is what makes doing this all the more fun to do as you get to see some pretty solid efforts by the prospects. Saturday night is was sophomore center Cristoval "Boo" Nieves (NYR 2012 2nd) of the 10th ranked Michigan Wolverines showing off his skills to help Michigan earn a 7-4 win over RIT.

This one was not pretty nor was it the kind of win that Michigan coach Red Berenson likes to see his team play but he will take it considering that it still was a win. Nieves registered a 1-1-2 evening for his first points of the season and Nieves did his damage in the 1st period as part of a Michigan 4 goal outburst.

Nieves earned a secondary assist on Phil Di Giuseppe's power play goal just 2:25 into the game giving Michigan an early 1-0 lead. Nieves would score Michigan's 4th goal of the game at 13:32 while on a 2 on 1 breakaway as he finished off the play with a shot that beat RIT goalie Jordan Ruby over his shoulder.

Nieves would finish 1-1-2 on 4 shots with an evening while going 7-6 on his face offs. For us 4 shots from Nieves is what we should set as his benchmark every game as that would be a good sign that he is being active in the game.

The Rest of the Prospects

Adam Pelech (NYI 2012 3rd)
had a secondary assist on Erie's 4th goal of the game but the Erie Otters still needed the shootout to earn a 6-5 win over the Saginaw Spirit. It was Pelech's 4th straight game with a point (1-3-4) as Erie has won 4 straight games to improve to 6-2-1-0 on the season.

Teammate Troy Donnay (NYR 2013 UFA) missed the game due to what is being called an "upper body injury", I believe Donnay suffered this injury during this fight on Friday night with Max Iafrate of the Kitchener Rangers. I think when Donnay was slammed to the ice that he was injured there. Thanks to JimKorn20 for posting the clip

Victor Crus-Rydberg (NYI 2013 5th) scored his 2nd goal of the season as his Plymouth Whalers defeated the Kitchener Rangers 4-2. It was a power play goal that came just 23 seconds into the 2nd period erasing a 1-0 Kitchener lead as Plymouth would score 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period.

Plymouth improves to 4-6 on the season.

It is not very often that a goalie gives up 3 goals in a 3-0 loss and still winds up with a star but that is what happened to goalie Stephon Williams (NYI 2013 4th) of the 11th ranked Minnesota State Mavericks.

The Mavericks were defeated 3-0 by the 14th ranked Providence Friars allowing Providence to earn a sweep of the 2 game set. Williams while improving on Friday night's numbers gave up 3 goals on 38 shots.

Adam Tambellini (NYR 2013 3rd) earned his 1st NCAA career assist on his 7th ranked North Dakota's 2nd goal but it was not enough as North Dakota played to a 2-2 overtime time with Vermont. Still while it is only 2 games, I do like the aggressive start by Tambellini and hopes he keeps it up.

Kyle Burroughs (NYI 2013 7th) had a secondary assist on Regina's 1st goal of the game but the Pats needed an 8 round shootout before finally defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 for their 3rd straight win. Burrough's assist gives him 9 points on the season (0-9-9) and a 4 game scoring streak (0-7-7).

Ryan Pulock (NYI 2013 1st)) had a secondary assist but it was not enough as his Brandon Wheat Kings were defeated by the Saskatoon Blades 5-3. For Pulock it was his 5th assist and 7th overall point for the Wheat Kings. Pulock is 2-5-7 on the season as the Wheat Kings are 5-4 on the season.

5th ranked Minnesota had both New York Islander prospects Jake Bischoff (NYI 2012 6th) and Taylor Cammarata (NYI 2013 3rd) and their lone Ranger prospect Brady Skjei (NYR 2012 1st) in their lineup as the Golden Gophers defeated 12th ranked New Hampshire 3-2 to win their own tournament the "Ice Breaker".

None of the 3 prospects scored while Skeji was a +2 while Bischoff was a +1.

8th ranked Notre Dame made it back to back shutouts after stopping 18th ranked Western Michigan 3-0. Neither Steven Fogarty (NYR 2011 3rd) or Robbie Russo (NYI 2011 4th) scored for Notre Dame. Fogarty had shots on net while Russo had just 1.

Mackenzie Skapski (NYR 2013 6th)
gave up 3 goals on 21 shots as his Kootenay Ice were shut out on the road 3-0 by the Medicine Hat Tigers. Not going to get on a kid who was just beaten by the WHL's 2nd best team in the WHL.

Doyle Somerby (NYI 2012 5th) was a health scratch for his Boston University Terriers as they edged Holy Cross 3-2.
