An interesting development over the past several years has been more PEI players pushing for the NHL. Back in the '80's, the knock on Island boys was that they didn't want to leave home. It used to be the Island was only accessible by a ferry from Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. The Confederation Bridge was built in the '90's and I think the community has lost a little bit of it's separation anxiety, and the kids their aren't as likely to get homesick by playing away. By the way, Jason MacDonald played for the Rangers in 2004, making his NHL debut.
