The Niagara IceDogs were going for their 4th straight win at home taking on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Ryan Strome (NYI 2011 1st) played a "smart" game in this one registering a goal (9th) and a primary assist (10th) as he helped the IceDogs to a rather easy 5-1 win.
Let's show the highlights first as one had to like the way Strome played here. The highlights courtesy of the good folks at TVCogecoOntario.
On Niagara's first goal, really liked how Strome showed his patience waiting out the Greyhound player trying block the pass then puts it right between the 2 Greyhound defenders. It was a shorthanded goal for the IceDogs and it gave them the lead 1-0.
With Niagara already up 2-1, Strome made it 3-1 with a blast of a shot. Strome took advantage of 2 teammates in front of the Greyhound's goal so he blasted it.
Every coach will tell you that good things happen when you put the puck on net. Strome either was going to score or his teammates were in perfect position to cash any rebound in.
Strome extends his 2nd scoring streak of the season to 6 games (4-5-9) as he moves up to 4th in the OHL scoring race (9-10-19). Strome finished his evening 1-1-2 +2 with 4 PIMs, give Strome a pass on the penalties as a frustrated Greyhound team turned a bit too chippy.
Teammate Jesse Graham (NYI 2012 6th) was scoreless and a +2 but Mitchell Theoret (NYI 2011 7th) missed the game with what the IceDogs are calling an "upper body" injury and no update as to when he will return.
On the other hand one might not want to watch the highlights of Peter Ceresnak (NYR 2011 6th) and his Peterborough Petes as they hosted the London Knights. Remember the saying "good teams find ways to win, bad teams find ways to lose?"
That pretty much sums up the game in a nutshell as Peterborough could not hold a 4-2 lead going into the 3rd period and lost the game 5-4 when London cashed in their only power play of the night with just 32 seconds left in regulation.

Peter Ceresnak was scoreless and a -2 on the night. It may be early in the season but the loss drops the Petes in last place in the OHL. The franchise has already fired the General Manager but just 2 wins in 12 games doesn't ensure job security for current head coach (and former NYR assistant) Mike Pelino.
The Petes are now winless in their last 5 games (0-2-2-1).
Samuel Noreau (NYR 2011 5th) and his Baie-Comeau Drakkar did something that the Drakkar had not done since February of 2008. They defeated the Quebec Remparts 8-2 to snap a 17 game losing streak that the Drakkar had at Colisée Pepsi in Quebec City.
Noreau was scoreless with no shots but was a +1 while registering 1 hit and took a minor for cross checking. The Drakkar are unbeaten in their last 5 games as they handed the Remparts their first loss of the season at home.

The WHL announced the roster for their 2 game portion of the 2012 Subway Super Series and Griffin Reinhart (NYI 2012 1st) AND Michael St. Croix (NYR 2011 4th) were named to play in both games. In fact 7 members of the Edmonton Oil Kings (and 3 Portland Winterhawks) were named to Team WHL.
Reinhart was a no-brainier as he was expected to be on the roster but for Michael St. Croix it was long overdue recognition of the hard work he has put in to become a better player. Yes go right ahead and call me biased because I like St. Croix but I don't care.
St. Croix should have been invited to Hockey Canada's Summer Camp based on the season he had last season. These 2 games are part of the process used by Hockey Canada to determine who gets the invites to tryout for the Under-20 squad.
If for no other reason I want St. Croix on the roster to play on the power play. St. Croix is 4th in the WHL in power play goals (6) and power play assists (8) so if you want a power play specialist then here is your guy.
