Michael St. Croix (NYR 2011 4th) and Griffin Reinhart (NYI 2012 1st) are teammates on the Edmonton Oil Kings now but that will change down the road. Thursday night the Oil Kings were in Regina to play the Regina Pats and they had little trouble defeating the Pats scoring 7 goals as they shut the Pats out 7-0 earning their 10th straight win.
The key to this win was Edmonton going 4 for 7 on the power play with Michael St. Croix (1-1-2) and Griffin Reinhart (0-1-1) getting in on the act. The Oil Kings jumped on the Pats from the start scoring just 55 seconds into the game and they never looked back.
Michael St. Croix would make it 2-0 when he scored a power play goal at 12:19 of the 1st period. It was St. Croix's 28 goal of the season but it was also his 18th power play goal which leads the WHL.
In the 2nd period, St. Croix would earn the primary assist on the Oil King's 3rd goal of the game. This one was also on the power play and it was St. Croix's 16th power play assist.
Griffin Reinhart got in on the power play party when he got the primary assist on the Oil King's 4th goal. It was Reinhart's 5th power play assist on the season (4-5-9 on the power play, 6-14-20 overall) as the Oil Kings broke the game open with 4 goals in the 3rd.
St. Croix earned a secondary assist on Edmonton's 6th goal for his 3rd point of the game. St. Croix was named the 1st star of the game as he extended his scoring streak to 11 games (7-10-17) and overall to 28-38-66 (13th in WHL).
Edmonton moves on to face Brandon on Friday evening and then Swift Current on Sunday to finish their road trip.
In Peterborough, it was clash of the 9th place teams as Windsor who is 9th in the OHL's Western Conference was taking on Peter Ceresnak (NYR 2011 6th) and his Peterborough Petes 9th in the Eastern Conference. Both teams are still in the hunt for playoff spots which made this game important for both teams.
The Petes were coming off a 10-6 win on Wednesday but found themselves on the wrong end of a 9-4 score. The game started with the Petes scoring a power play goal just 54 seconds into the game and for most of the period did not play all that badly.
Windsor would tie the game with a power play goal (they went 4 for 6 on power plays) at the 14 minute mark. The Petes retook the lead 1:17 later when Ceresnak set up Nick Ritchie for a goal to make it 2-1.
Then things went south for the Petes as Windsor tied the score 8 seconds later at 15:25 and then took the lead for good 1:22 later on a power play goal ending the 1st period with a 3-2 lead. Windsor would add 2 goals in the 2nd to make it 5-2 after 2 periods.
The Petes scored 15 seconds into the 3rd period to make it a 2 goal game but Windsor would respond with a goal at 4:44 to regain the 3 goal lead. The Petes would score again but Windsor just kept scoring until the final buzzer.
For Ceresnak, his assist was his 6th on the season giving him 7 overall points.
Friday is going to be fun (at least for us) as Boo Nieves (NYR 2012 2nd) leads his Michigan Wolverines into South Bend Indiana to face Anders Lee (NYI 2009 6th), Robbie Russo (NYI 2011 4th), Steven Fogarty (NYR 2011 3rd) and their 12th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network starting at 7:30 PM EDT/4:30 PM PDT as both teams have been struggling to find wins as of late.
Then while it might not have any prospects in the game, the Portland Winterhawks are in Kelowna to face the Rockets in a key WHL Western Conference matchup. Kelowna has won 23 straight home games but trail Portland by 5 points for the lead in the Western Conference. This game will be on Shaw in Canada and Root Sports Northwest in the USA starting at 10 PM EDT/7 PM PDT.
