Second Star Cuylle, Third Star Othmann Lead Their Teams To Wins

It was "Family Day" up in Canada which meant afternoon hockey for three New York Ranger prospects. And in what is becoming the norm, Will Cuylle and Brennan Othmann earned stars for their performances.

The game's third star Brennan Othmann opened the scoring for his Flint Firebirds as they spanked the Sarnia Sting 7-3. It took Othmann all of 47 seconds to find the net as he earned his 34th goal of the season.

Watch the replay of this goal and you will see how Othmann scores from long distance and gets the puck past Sarnia's goalie.

That folks is how a natural goal scorer can find ways to score from any spot on the ice as Othmann did.  Flint goes up 1-0 before the game is one minute old and it set the tone for his teammates as they scored three times in the first period.

Othmann would be involved in the scoring of Firebirds' final goal of the game as he set up linemate Sahil Panwar for a goal at 1:43 of the third period. Playing his 100rd career OHL game, the assist would give the Firebirds captain his 99th career point.

Overall Othmann is 34-32-66 in 45 games this season, his 34 goals puts him second among OHL goal scorers. Othmann's 66 points is sixth best among OHL scorers.

Will Cuylle would be named the game's second star as his Windsor Spitfires doubled up the Saginaw Spirit 6-3. Cuylle earned three assists to extend his scoring streak to four games (2-5-7) and improve his season totals to 28-23-51.

The Spitfire captain started with a secondary assist on Wyatt Johnson's goal at 1:29 of the second period which gave the Spitfires a 3-0 lead. Assist number two was a primary assist as Cuylle hit Louka Henault with a cross-ice pass that Henault converted.

That would put the Spitfires up 4-0 and prove to be the game-winning goal. Cuylle's third assist came after Saginaw would get on the scoreboard when Cuylle carried the puck to the Saginaw goal and teammate Pasquale Zito would cash in the rebound of Cuylle's shot for a 5-1 Windsor lead.

But Cuylle would not be around for the finish as he would receive a five-minute major and game misconduct for "boarding" at 15:27 of the third period. The penalty will be reviewed by the OHL office to see if any further discipline will be handed out.

Cuylle would finish the game 0-3-3 on one shot with a "check to the head" minor to go along with the boarding major.

Evan Vierling had a primary assist but it wasn't enough as his Barrie Colts were edged 4-3 by the Peterborough Petes. The assist came on Barrie's first goal as it extended Vierling's scoring streak to six games (3-6-9) and 11-20-31 on the season.

Did Not Play

The word on Dylan Garand is that he has a lower body injury but he is not expected to miss a lot of time. His Kamloops Bazers clinched a spot in the WHL playoffs after a win over the Everett Silvertips on Monday.

Talyn Boyko got the day off serving as the backup goalie for his Kelowna Rockets as they defeated the Tri-City Americans 5-3.
