Cuylle's Two Point Game Helps Windsor Knock Off Flint

There was good news and bad news for Brennan Othmann and his Flint Firebirds on Sunday. The good news was they became the first Western Conference team in the OHL to clinch a playoff spot.

The bad news was that Will Cuylle and his Windsor Spitfires spanked them 7-4 and cut the Firebirds' lead over the Spitfires to just one point while Windsor holds two games in hand. The game's third star Will Cuylle's three-point effort led the way for the Spitfires as they used a five-goal first period to blow open the game and cruise the rest of the way for the win.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the first period, Cuylle scored his 34th goal of the season to give his Spitfires a 2-1 lead that they never looked back from. The even-strength goal at 9:56 was the start of four unanswered goals by the Spitfires to end the first period.

The goal extended Cuylle's current scoring streak to a season-high nine games (6-8-14)  and overall totals to 34-31-65. Cuylle would also add two primary assists on the Spitfires' sixth and seventh goals as the Spitfires won their third straight.

The Windsor captain finished 1-2-3 on three shots with a +3 and a 2-1 record on faceoffs. As for Brennan Othmann, he had a primary assist to extend his own scoring streak to six games (4-5-9) as he improved his season totals to 40-43-83.

Evan Vierling was scoreless as his Barrie Colts were edged by the North Bay Battalion 3-2 in OHL Eastern Conference play. Vierling was limited to three shots and was 7-8 on his faceoffs.

The Colts are holding onto the fifth seed in the OHL's Eastern Conference 10 points out of fourth place but a six-point lead over sixth-placed Oshawa while holding three games in hand.

Matthew Rempe returned from his three-game suspension to see his Seattle Thunderbirds get shutout on the road by the Portland Winterhawks 3-0.  Rempe had two shots with a -1 and was 9-10 on faceoffs as the Winterhawks dominated this game from start to finish.

Brody Lamb had two primary assists as his Green Bay Gamblers were spanked 8-3 by the Madison Capitols in USHL action. A scoreless first period became a four-goal second for the Capitols and Green Bay was never in this game.

Lamb is 15-16-31 on the season.

Invited To The NCAA Tournament

Riley Hughes and his Northeastern Huskies had to sweat out a Saturday of conference championships before learning that they were the last team in as an "At Large" invite to the 2022 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

They will get to stay close to home playing in the Worcester Regional as the fourth seed playing against the region's top seed Western Michigan on Friday, March 25th starting at 12 ET/9PT. The game will be televised on ESPNU or can be streamed via ESPN+.

ICYMI

Welcome to the Rangers defenseman Brandon Scanlin of Nebraska-Omaha who signed a two-year entry-level contract. Scanlin is a 6'4 214lb defender with one glaring weakness, his skating is not even close to NHL-level skating.

That being said Scanlin is a good defender with some offense who if they fix the skating could become a contributor. Fixing skating isn't as big a problem as it used to be as the Rangers have plenty of coaching help in that regard.
