Riley Hughes And Northeastern Win Hockey East

Hugo Ollas (Merrimack College)
You know the old saying about "saving the best for last"? Welcome to Saturday New York Rangers prospects as this is the time of year where we learn so much about the prospects good and bad. Ten prospects took to the ice on Saturday night, some in games where there was a lot at stake.

Riley Hughes and his Northeastern Huskies entered their game against Hugo Ollas and his Merrimack Warriors with a chance to win a their very first Hockey East regular season championship with a win. Ollas and friends needed just to make it to overtime to earn fourth place and a first round bye in the Hockey East playoffs.

It was one of the best played games of the year as both teams played a solid clean game with Merrimack's Ollas and Northeastern's goalie Devon Levi matching each other save for save for 59:51. With just nine seconds remaining in regulation, Northeastern would break through for the only goal allowed in the game as the Huskies earned a 1-0 win.

Hughes was scoreless on two shots but he played a very good game defensively. Ollas was almost perfect stopping 28 out of 29 shots but took the loss. Ollas went toe-to-toe with the second best goalie in the NCAA in Levi who was on Canada's Olympic and recent Under-20 team so he has nothing to be ashamed of.

Ollas proved that he is a solid NHL goalie prospect in just his first season playing in North America. He is 9-5 with a goals against of 2.00 and a save percentage of 0.927.

Northeastern gets to rest and wait to see who they will face at home next Saturday. Merrimack will get to host Maine on Wednesday in a single elimination game for the first round of the Hockey East playoffs.

Simon Kjellberg (RPI)
It is that time of the year, win or go home as was the case when Simon Kjellberg and his Rensselaer Engineers faced off against the Dartmouth Big Green in game two of their ECAC playoff series. Dartmouth took game one on Friday and was looking to end the series Saturday.

Kjellberg the junior defenseman and assistant captain did his share to force a game three as he scored the game's first goal at 8:17 to give Rensselaer a lead they would never give up winning 3-2 and force a deciding third game on Sunday.

A pinching Kjellberg picked up a rebound and cashed it in for his sixth goal of the season. Kjellberg improves to 6-18-24, a career-high in both goals and points.

Sunday the two teams will face each other once again starting at 4 PM EDT. If you have ESPN+ then you can watch the game live.

Matthew Rempe rewarded his coach's confidence with a shorthanded goal as his Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Everett Silvertips 4-3 for Seattle's third straight win. Seattle's coaching staff added Rempe to both the power play and penalty kill units after not using him during the first half of the season.

Tonight against their arch-rivals the Everett Silvertips, Rempe picked up a loose puck at center ice, drove to the net fired a shot at Everett's goalie that he first stopped but it continued to trickle past the goalie for a shorthanded goal and 2-0 Seattle lead.

For Rempe, it is his very first WHL shorthanded goal in his 98th career game. The goal was also his 14th of the season on four shots as he was 4-10 on faceoffs. That win also meant something else as the Thunderbirds punched their ticket to the 2022 WHL playoffs.

Now the race for home ice begins as Seattle currently sits third in the WHL's US Division, nine points out of first but six points out of second with two games in hand. They hold the fourth seed in the WHL's Western Conference one point better than the Kelowna Rockets who hold a game in hand on Seattle.

Speaking of Kelowna, Talyn Boyko stopped 31 out of 34 shots to help his Kelowna Rockets earn a 5-3 win over the Vancouver Giants. The win punched Kelowna's ticket to the WHL playoffs as well.

For the Rockets, their problem as of late has been inconsistent play during the game. Boyko stopped all 13 shots in the first period but allowed three goals on 13 shots in the second before stopping all eight shots to seal the win in the third.

The 2021 fourth round draft pick earned his 23rd win of the season which is fifth best in the WHL. Boyko is 23-14-2-1 with a goals against of 3.08 and a save percentage of 0.908. The question becomes is Boyko wearing down as he has played in 42 games which is the third most in the WHL.

Evan Vierling had a two-point night as his Barrie Colts used a five-goal first period to cruise to a 5-2 win over the Ottawa 67s. Vierling earned a secondary assist on Barrie's first goal then added his 15th goal of the season to help fuel the five-goal first.

The Barrie center has goals in three straight games (4) as his strong play in the second half continues. For the game, Vierling was 1-1-2 on four shots with a +2 as he went 13-6 on his faceoffs.

Overall Vierling is now 15-21-36 thanks to going 7-7-14 in his last ten games.

Will Cuylle and his Windsor Spitfires spanked the Soo Greyhounds 7-3 in OHL action. Cuylle earned a primary assist on the Spitfires' final goal, an empty-net goal that was also shorthanded.

The Spitfire captain beside the 0-1-1 was credited with two shots and was a +2 while going 0-2 on faceoffs.

Ryder Korczak was scoreless as his Moose Jaw Warriors rallied from two goals down to defeat the Brandon Wheat Kings 6-5. Korczak was credited for three shots with a -2 and was 12-10 on his faceoffs.

Moose Jaw was able to break a two-game losing streak.

Brody Lamb was scoreless as his Green Bay Gamblers earned a 2-1 over the Chicago Steel in USHL action. Lamb was not credited for any points or shots as the win moved the Gamblers back into sixth place in the USHL's Eastern Conference.

The top six teams in both conferences make the playoffs.

Brennan Othmann and his Flint Firebirds dropped a 5-3 decision to the Erie Otters. Othmann was held scoreless on five shots and a -2.

Jayden Grubbe was scoreless on three shots and a -1 as his Red Deer Rebels lost 5-2 to the Saskatoon Blades. Grubbe was 10-4 on faceoffs as the loss ends a seven-game winning streak of the Rebels.

Did Not Play

Dylan Garand remains out for the Kamloops Blazers with a "lower-body" injury. He is listed as "day-to-day" but has missed eight straight games going back to February 18th.
