Brennan Othmann (Flint Firebirds) |
It was also the home opener for the Firebirds who put on a good show for the home fans. Othmann was a +1 on four shots but what the stats don't show is that he was everywhere. Like I said yesterday about there being exceptions to the rule as Othmann doesn't belong in the OHL.
Bedard is going to skip the AHL and go directly to the Rangers next season if this is the kind of play he is going to play this season.
Brett Bedard (2020 fifth) scored his third goal of the season in highlight reel fashion as his 11th-ranked Providence Friars knocked off American International 5-1. Bedard finished off a "tic-tac-toe" passing play by slamming home a shot from the right side of the goal.
Bedard had six shots as he improved to 3-2-5 after three games, all Providence wins. Providence is 3-0 on the season for the first time since the 20113-14 season. At this pace Bedard is looking at a 35-25-60 point regular season.
Goalie Dylan Garand (2020 fourth) earned his second win of the season after stopping 32 out of 35 shots as his Kamloops Blazers spanked the Prince George Cougars 8-3. The only goals that Garand gave up were all on the power-play as neither team played with much discipline.
Garand faced eight power plays as he stopped seven of seven in the first, 16 out of 18 in the second and finished by stopping nine of ten in the third. It wasn't pretty but when Garand came under pressure, he handled it quite well.
Garand made several very good saves with his glove hand and controlled the puck not giving up many second chances. A strong performance to improve to 2-0 with a 3.51 goals against and a 0.891 save percentage.
Defenseman Simon Kjellberg (2018 sixth) and his Rensselaer Engineers dropped a 3-2 overtime loss to Bowling Green in non-conference play. Kjellberg earned his first point of the season with a primary assist on Rensselaer's second goal of the game.
Kjellberg was credited with four shots on goal but attempted nine. He was also a -1 with two blocked shots.
Center Evan Vierling (2020 fifth) earned his first point of the season in a losing effort as his Barrie Colts blew a 4-1 lead to fall in overtime 5-4 to the Hamilton Bulldogs. Vierling earned a secondary assist on Barrie's third goal which was a power-play goal and at the time gave Barrie a 3-1 lead.
Vierling did not record any shots on goal but was a -1 and 10-7 on his faceoffs.
Goalie Tayln Boyko (2021 fourth) was charged for five goals (on 26 shots) as his Tri-City Americans lost to rival Spokane 5-2. The reason I used charged was because three of those goals Spokane scored on the power play and it was hard to blame Boyko.
Two of the goals came on back-to-back"5-on-3"s as Tri-City was their own worst enemy in this one as they lacked on-ice discipline and practically gave Spokane this game. Boyko drops to 1-1 with 4.32 goals against and a 0.868 save percentage.
Center Matt Rempe (2020 sixth) had a quiet evening as his Seattle Thunderbirds lost to the Portland Winterhawks 4-2. Rempe was scoreless on one shot with a -1, a minor for tripping, and a 6-5 record on his faceoffs.
Center Jayden Grubbe (2021 third) was scoreless and 4-13 on faceoffs as his Red Deer Rebels lost in overtime to the Lethbridge Hurricanes 2-1. The stat sheet doesn't tell you that Grubbe was solid on the forecheck and didn't play all that bad despite the faceoff numbers.
Right-Wing Eric Ciccolini (2019 seventh) had one shot but was scoreless as his 3rd-ranked Michigan Wolverines rallied for a 7-4 win over Lake Superior State. Ciccolini was pretty much invisible in this game.
Right-Wing Riley Hughes (2018 seventh) and his Northeastern Huskies got shut out by 9th-ranked Quinnipac in non-conference play. Hughes didn't even attempt a shot in this contest.
Did Not Play
Goalie Hugo Ollas (2020 seventh) dressed but did not play in his Merrimack's 4-2 win over Sacred Heart.
