Sunday Prospects: A Bad Day

Talyn Boyko (Kelowna Rockets)
For all the excellent play that the New York Rangers prospects showed on Saturday, Sunday was the opposite. Where to begin? From asking teams to play three games in three days to Covid issues, what was supposed to be seven prospects in action dropped to three.

Talyn Boyko and his Kelowna Rockets traveled to Everett to face the WHL's Western Conference-leading Everett Silvertips armed with an eight-game winning streak. Boyko was on a seven-game winning streak of his own.

Both streaks crashed and burned as Everett used a dominating first period to spank Kelowna 6-2. The Silvertips held a 21-2 advantage in shots on goal after the first period as Boyko surrendered two goals while making 19 saves.

What is scary is that if not for Boyko the score could have been a whole lot worse as the Rockets ended the first just down 2-0. The Rockets were playing their third road game in three days as by the time you are reading this will have traveled 902 miles round trip.

Boyko had last night off and while he kept the team in the game during that insane first period, he ran out of gas in the second as Everett scored three times to blow the game open. By the time the game ended Boyko had faced 43 shots and stopped 37 of them.

Will Cuylle (Windsor Spitfires)
Boyko's numbers fell to 17-12-2-1 with a goals-against of 3.08 and a save percentage of 0.909.

Will Cuylle celebrated his 20th birthday on Saturday as his Windsor Spitfires had the night off. Sunday was a different story as the Spitfires hosted the Sarnia Sting and were too good of hosts handing the Sting a 6-2 win.

Cuylle earned the game's third star off a two-goal performance but not much else went right for him and his teammates. The captain of the Spitfires got his team going with his 25th goal of the season with his team on the power play.

This goal was the definition of what a power forward can do as Cuylle simply muscled his way to the front of the net and forced the puck in.

That goal gave the Spitfires a 1-0 lead which they took into the first intermission. The Sting would tie the game at 1-1 midway of the second but Cuylle would give his team back their lead three minutes later when he poked a puck into an open net with the Spitfires once again on the power play.

The second of his two goals would give Cuylle 26 on the season and 10 power-play goals as it gave the Spitfires a 2-1 lead. But the game would fall apart for the Spitfires over a span of 1:45 while still in the second period.

Sarnia scored twice to take a 3-2 lead then broke the game open with three more goals in the third. For Cuylle, his day was 2-0-2 -3 on three shots and 4-1 on faceoffs.

Overall Cuylle is 26-18-44 in 33 games, his 26 goals are good for ninth in the OHL and the 10 power-play goals are good for third in the OHL.

Brody Lamb and his Green Bay Gamblers were playing their third game in three nights as they traveled to Cedar Rapids to face the Cedar Rapids Roughriders. Lamb had a rough go of it as his team lost 4-1 as Lamb was scoreless on two shots with a -3 and a minor for tripping just 31 seconds into the game that Cedar Rapids converted for a power-play goal.

Did Not Play

Dylan Garand was the backup goalie for his Kamloops Blazers in their game against the Victoria Royals. Kamloops won to extend their winning streak to nine games.

Evan Vierling remains out for his Barrie Colts with a shoulder issue. Vierling has missed four games as he last played on January 29th.

Matthew Rempe and his Seattle Thunderbirds saw their game against the Vancouver Giants postponed due to Covid-19 concerns with the Giants. Rempe had just returned to the T-bird lineup with Covid-19 issues of his own.
