Cuylle's Hat Trick Extends Scoring Streak To 12 Games

Will Cuylle (OHL Images)
A busy Saturday night for the nine New York Ranger prospects, but it was a pretty good night as well. Eight goals and five assists, two first stars, and seven wins made for a solid evening.

Don't look now, but after his Windsor Spitfires defeated the Soo Greyhounds 5-3 for their sixth straight win, look who is in first place in the OHL's Western Conference. Will Cuylle recorded his second "hat trick" of the season as the Spitfires rallied back from down 2-0 and 3-2 to earn the win.

Cuylle's first goal came at 17:56 of the first period while on the power play to tie the game at 2-2. After the Greyhounds had taken a 3-2 lead in the second, Cuylle tied the score again with an even-strength goal at 11:44.

The hat trick goal was also the dagger goal as Cuylle found a loose puck in front of an empty Greyhound goal. The hat trick night extended Cuylle's scoring streak to 12 games (10-12-22) as he improved his season totals to 38-35-73. Cuylle moves up to sixth place in OHL goal scorers and fourth for power-play goal scoring with 13.

The Spitfires lead the OHL's Western Conference by four points over the London Knights and the OHL's West Division by five over the Flint Firebirds.

First Star Jayden Grubbe had two goals to lead his Red Deer Rebels to a 6-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos. The Red Deer captain scored first in the first period when he deflected a shot from the point past the Swift Current goalie at 14:19.

That goal gave Swift Current a 3-0 lead and would prove to be the eventual game winning goal. In the second period, with Red Deer now up 4-2, Grubbe gave Red Deer a three-goal lead when he one-timed a shot from the slot past the Swift Current goalie.

Besides the two goals, Grubbe was 12-7 on his face-offs for the game. Grubbe improves to 12-19-31.

Brody Lamb (Green Bay Gamblers)
Entering Saturday's USHL game against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, Brody Lamb and his Green Bay Gamblers were in eighth place in the USHL's Eastern Conference. Since only the top six teams make the playoffs and the teams the Gamblers are chasing hold games in hand, Green Bay badly needed a win.

Lamb with a 1-2-3 performance, helped his Gamblers to a 7-2 win. Lamb got his scoring going with a primary assist on Green Bay's first goal of the game. The goal tied the game at 1-1, but Muskegon would score again to end the first period up 2-1.

In the second period, Lamb would tie the game with his 16th goal of the season, a power-play goal just 19 seconds into the period to tie the game at 2-2. It was the start of six unanswered goals by the Gamblers.

Lamb's third point of the night was a secondary assist on the Gambler's seventh goal coming at 17:16 of the third period. Lamb saw his numbers improve to 16-19-35.

The Gamblers are in a three-way tie for sixth place in the USHL's Eastern Conference with just 10 regular season games remaining.

Dylan Garand and his Kamloops Blazers were in Kelowna to face Talyn Boyko and the Kelowna Rockets for the 14th and final time this season. A win would clinch the WHL's BC Division title for the Blazers, who were also on a nine-game winning streak.

Garand was also on a shutout string of 160 minutes, which included two shutouts against the Rockets. Boyko was in the midst of a personal six-game winless streak.

Consider both streaks over as Kelowna stopped the Blazers 5-3 and delayed the Blazers from clinching the WHL's BC Division title.

Kamloops would score the only goal in the first period despite being out shot 12-10. After the first period, it was looking like another Kamloops win. But the Rockets came out on fire in the second period scoring four goals to grab a 4-1 lead and ending Garand's shutout string at 183:14.

A shutout streak of over three games worth is impressive in its own right. The Rockets out-shot the Blazers 23-5 as Talyn Boyko's teammates finally supported him with some offense. But the third period saw the Blazers mount a comeback of their own.

A quick goal at the start of the third period cut the score to 4-2, and Kamloops would pull to within one at the 8:30 mark of the third period. The game then became a battle for survival as both teams made plays to deny the other scoring chances until Kamloops scored an empty net goal with just two seconds left in the game.

Boyko got the win to improve to 25-18-2-3. Garand took the loss as he fell to 30-8.

Brennan Othmann scored his 41st goal of the season, but it wasn't enough to keep his Flint Firebirds from losing to rivals the Saginaw Spirit 5-4. With his Firebirds trailing 2-0 in the second and playing shorthanded, Othmann was sent on a breakaway and he went "five-hole" for the goal.

It was Othmann's fourth shorthanded goal of the season, which tied a Flint team record. Othmann would also pick up a secondary assist on Flint's fourth goal, which at the time tied the game at 4-4. Saginaw would get the winner a few minutes later

Overall, Othmann is the leading scorer for his team and all the Rangers prospects with a 41-44-85 record. He is second in the OHL for goals, seventh for points, and sixth in shorthanded goals.

Ryder Korczak got his Moose Jaw Warriors going with his 22nd goal of the season as they blew out the Saskatoon Blades 7-0. The goal at 3:47 of the first period was credited as the game-winner by Korczak, who also added a primary assist on Moose Jaws' fourth goal.

The two points give Korczak a 22-49-71 mark on the season, all-new career bests.

Evan Vierling and his Barrie Colts rallied with three goals in the third to defeat the Kingston Frontenacs 4-2. Vierling would have the primary assists on Barrie's third and fourth goals of the game.

It wasn't a perfect game, but the 0-2-2 came with two shots, a +1 and he was 7-10 on face-offs. The assists gave Vierling a new career best of 18-26-44.

Matthew Rempe and his Seattle Thunderbirds made it two straight wins over the Vancouver Giants after a 6-2 win. Rempe was scoreless on three shots while going 9-8 on his faceoffs and served as a bench minor for his team.
