Othmann's Two Goals Help Flint Open A 2-0 Series Lead Over The Soo

Mother's Day saw just three New York Rangers prospects in action and to be honest, these afternoons games after evening games do not make for the best hockey. Unless you are inhuman like Brennan Othmann is.

Othmann had a 2-1-3 effort as his Flint Firebirds regained the home-ice advantage after a 5-3 win over the Soo Greyhounds in game three of their OHL playoff series. Othmann was a factor all night long.

It started with the game's second star, Othmann setting up Gavin Hayes for Flint's first goal which tied the game up at 1-1. Othmann would give his team a 2-1 lead at 19:18 of the period when he scored the first of his two goals.

It was Othmann's sixth goal of the playoffs, an even-strength goal at 19:18 of the first period giving Flint a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission. The second period saw the Greyhounds rally to tie the game at 3-3 as they headed into the second intermission.

In the third, Othmann put the Firebirds ahead for good with his seventh goal of the playoffs. At 7-5-12, Othmann is fourth in OHL goals and ninth in overall scoring

What a stick lift, what a shot! 🎯@NYRangers prospect and @FlintFirebirds captain Brennan Othmann steals the puck off the face-off and wires it past Ivanov to give the home crowd in Flint a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes! #FLNTvsSOO pic.twitter.com/PMmkwvKNXA

Let's face it the Firebirds will go as far as their captain can lead them and right now it is a 2-0 series lead over the Greyhounds. Game three will be Tuesday at the home of the Soo Greyhounds.

Will Cuylle was held scoreless as his Windsor Spitfires dropped game 2 of their OHL series with the Kitchener Rangers 4-2. Give the credit to Kitchener goalie Jackson Parsons as he stopped 37 out of 39 shots to earn the win.

The only thing really wrong was that Windsor could not solve Parsons as they outplayed the Rangers. Cuylle was credited with four shots and despite the -2 was also 4-0 on faceoffs and a minor penalty for tripping.

Game 3 will be Tuesday in Kitchener.

Portland's Veterans Memorial Coliseum

So I got to spend my Sunday evening at the Portland Veterans Memorial Coliseum watching Matthew Rempeand his Seattle Thunderbirds take on the host Portland Winterhawks in Game two of their WHL playoff series.

And yes I had the best seat being on the centerline from the press box. Even better was there was Dean "Scooter" Vrooman on my left and Paul Danzer of the Portland Tribune on my right just like in the old days.

And credit to both teams for an entertaining game that was very close in pretty much every possible way. Portland earned a 2-1 win thanks to a late shorthanded goal with just 3:38 in regulation.

Matthew Rempe again pulled a new surprise for me as he drew two offensive zone power plays while he stayed out of the penalty box. He is learning how to be physical and not getting called for it as he was in the past.

And even better was seeing how much Rempe was used by the Seattle coaching staff. Every kind of shift, every specialty unit, and in the third when Seattle shortened their bench, there was Rempe taking shifts.

It has been mentioned here before that Rempe is a project player but he isn't waiting until the next training camp to make those improvements. And finally can't forget that Rempe has been using his size to score as he is 4-1-5 in six games. You folks will love Rempe when he shows up in New York.

Game three will be Wednesday evening in Portland with Portland up 2-0
